Geylang and Garuda

Sunday 13 Jul 08

Abang said that he has a recording session in Joo Chiat, of all places, and I have been wanting to go to Geylang for ages. So we decided to make that our activity for the day. After the children religious session, we dressed and went out at 10.45 am. That save my time of making lunch.

I was at Vivo last night and came across Garuda Nasi Pandang at Basement 2. So, I told the kids we are going there to eat after shopping in Geylang. Erin wasn't thrilled about Geylang, but was happy about the Vivo City, altough the purpose of going to Geylang was to get some Baju(s) for her.

Geylang was no event. After First Lady, we walked to Joo Chiat to buy kitab for Abang, but apparently Tokoh Warisan did not carry that Kitab. We looked for my frequent tailor, but it was closed. We were making our way to the bus stop, when I stopped at a Nyonya kedai which was the only kedai that still sells Mustika Ratu Sari Bunga. Been looking for that lotion for months now. While waiting for Erin and I browsing thru the products, Eriq found $10.00 note on the pathway. Rezki... Alhamdullillah.

We made our way to Vivo City on Bus No. 30. A long winding ride that took us 45 minutes from Geylang to Harbour Front. If we were to take a cab, it would only take 15 mins the most. But I want a slow Sunday. No need to hurry-burry.

We went straight to Garuda Nasi Pandang restaurant since everyone were so hungry. Its been awhile since I ate authentic Padang dishes.

We ordered Kari Kambing (2 pieces of ribs, the taste : so-so), Ayam Cili Hijau (2 pieces of chicken in green chilli gravy, nice), Terung sambal (nice for me cos I like brinjal, but the kids didn't even touch it), bergedil (3 pcs), Gulai Kikil (I love this, Kikil (kulit sapi), Eriq was not too thrill about it), Kangkung Belacan (nice) and we ordered drinks to go along with the meal.

After ordering, I asked them where do I pay, the service staff told me to 'eat first, pay later'. Oh.. okay.

The dishes were delicious, and we were happy, until... I went to the cashier to pay the bill. I was happy holding $50 in my hand, and looking that the portion that were served, I reckoned the bill couldn't be more than $30.00. How wrong I was ! Total bill : $65.80. What a ripped off ! It is too pricey for that kind of meal for 3, considering Erin is still under 12 years old! It semmed quite a lot to pay for nasi padang!

We could have gone to Sakura to enjoy a buffet dinner with non stop eating until we drop for that kind of money. There wasn't any warning what so ever. The restaurant looked decent for a quite meal... and I really mean quiet. There were only 3 tables of customers (less then 15 people) in the restaurant when we came in. While we were eating, Eriq was saying that the restaurant should have some kind of advertisement to attract customers since the food are delicious. I guess it did, just that the price that was keeping everyone away!

Are we going there again : A BIG NO
Recommend someone to go : Only our enemies
Its better to take a Ferry to Batam Island and eat at our good friends restaurant : Puti Bungsu. No regrets there.
