On my trip to Australia in 2004, I've came across restaurants with BYO signs on their windows. Not knowing what BYO was, I've asked one of the restaurant owners. So BYO is Bring Your Own - wine that is, with corkage fees charged. Restaurants in Australia allow their customers to bring their own wine.
So, when Singapore government came up with BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag), I don't know what to expect. Actually I wasn't even taking any notice of the whole BYOB scoop, until I paid for my purchases and the cashier asked me for 10 cent for the plastic bag should I need one. Darn it, of course I need bags, how am I going to carry all those things with only two hands.
I totally support the government in their effort to promote recycling and keeping Singapore environmental friendly. But being caught off guard really sucks. And who says I did not recycle the plastic bags? I reuse the bags for my trash bin. Don't we all? We were trained back in our younger days, complete with campaign and all, of tying your plastic/trash bag tightly before throwing it in the rubbish chute. We have been educated. We have been brainwashed.
There are other ways to make the earth environmental friendly. Instead of plastic bags, why not paper bags? Hmmm... that will mean cutting down trees...No...no... that's not the answer. Why not ban the use of plastic bags all together and provide cloth bags instead, we can reuse the bags over and over again. That way, we don't have to remember which Wednesday of the month is the BYOB day. But then, what about our trash at home? Without the plastic supermarket bags, I won't be able to line my trash bin.
Being a Singaporean, I understand why most are not really happy to be charged 10 cents for a piece of plastic bag. If I have trolley loads of purchase, I think I will just walk away with the trolley and leave it at my house for my next trip to NTUC on the first Wednesday of every month. If I am thinking of it, I bet lots of other Singaporeans think the same too, and instead of saving on plastic bags, the store will risk of losing their trolleys.
That reminds me of Dudley in Wild Hogs played by William Macy. He pooped into a plastic bag, and refused to bury it because it was plastic. While on a camping ground, he wanted to hang the poop bag on a tree so the 'bears won't eat it'. John Travolta's character - Woody said "Bears don't each SHIT!" hehehe. Dudley took the poop bag along on their road trip, because he is so into environmental freely and empty it only when he finds a rest room. Have you every seen John Travolta afraid of anything... well, this movie is worth the money spent.
Love the show. I saw it twice, two days in a row. First with Jazz, Mariam and Erin at 11.40 pm on 20 April, and again at 9.40 pm with Erin the next day. But on the second view, Erin laughed less. But she kept glancing at me and warned me not to laugh too loud which she said was embarrassing. That hurts.
We cycled to Jurong Point from home, in our bid to save the environment, and parked our bikes at the bicycle parking lot next to the MRT station. When we returned, and about to cycle to Jazz's, and searching for the blinker to switch it on, to my surprise both blinkers on both bikes were stolen! My blood really go upstairs! I tell you. How can someone steal something that actually function as a safety features for cyclists. Don't they know the dangerous that we have to face, cycling at night without our blinkers. Cheapskates !
